Herald Goa 20170106 The world through the glasses of Goa

Varje fredag under januari och februari kommer denna sida att förnyas med de senaste nyheterna sett utifrån Goa.                             Lennart

P-Day for Goa is Feb 4
PANJIM: Goa will go to the polls on February 4, counting will be on March 11. Chief Election Commissioner Dr Nasim Zaidi announced the schedule on Wednesday in Delhi, along with the poll schedule for Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand and Manipur.

With the announcement of dates, the model code of conduct has come into force in the State.  Over 11 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise at 1649 polling stations in 40 constituencies.

Chief Electoral Officer Kunal said the State election machinery is ready to begin the poll process and has set up flying squads in all 40 constituencies.

The main parties in the fray will be the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and the Aam Aadmi Party. A number of other regional and national parties will also be contesting the polls including Goa Forward, Nationalist Congress Party, United Goans and Goa Suraksha Manch.

With just a month to go to the polls, parties have been thrown into a flurry of activity to finalise and nominate candidates and also build alliances.

Margao:

Illegal bus stops in the town – is anyone watching?

The audacity of the private buses in making illegal stops in Margao has caused traffic jams and delays to commuters; deputy collector holds RTO and Traffic Cell responsible for not taking action on the erring buses.

A private bus travelling on Aquem, Davorlim, Borda or Navelim routes has been doing stops every 100 metres and there is no one to question them.

Mapusa in north Goa:

Raising a stink

With 150 workers for garbage clearing services, MMC unable to keep Mapusa clean; council blames non-cooperation by people, people say its municipality failure.

Goa:

The state is silent as tourists get traumatized by taxi owners

The scenes at the airports, the KTC bus stand at Margao and near resorts and hotels is nothing short of an Italian mafiosi kind of an operation where tourists are forced to pay disgustingly high amounts just to get to their hotels after long haul flights.

Panjim:

EDM over! Folk takes centre stage now

Lokotsav, the annual fiesta that celebrates folk art and handicraft, is back in the city of Panjim. Café finds out what is happening at this festival that will be on from January 6 to 15, 2017.

Goa films:

The Aamir Khan biopic, ‘Dangal’, has been trending across the country and beyond, for its tale that challenged stereotypes in sports. Café looks into whether this kind of production could really pave the path for future athletes in Goa.
