Hampi Vijayanagara ruled 1336 – 1565 (1571), many different dynasties,
often short periods.
The Portugisian invades the coast and build Goa 1510 and they also take
coastal areas above today Bombay.
The Muslim invasion from north 1565 destroyed all and killed all people.
Two employed brothers in a minor kingdom started on their own about 1336. Their imperia was
biggest around 1500.
Vijayanagara was the second biggest town in the world and
the army of almost two million soldiers was the biggest.
Businessmen from all
over the world came for trading.
Pictures were daily carved in the stones to
show what happened with trade of cloth and gold and others.
Today only the small village of Hampi remains. 27 km2 has
over 1000 monuments.
The map is from the book Hampi Vijayanagara.
Hampis' temple and
ruins are grouped into greater areas.
Our group used around 8 hours at Hampi, including one sunset
and one sunrise. We had a feeling of
seeing the most, but in a too short time. To see all and understand it, you
probably need a week.
Most parts are still
used in religious purpose.
